Update 4: Philander gets much-needed breakthrough

After adding 124 runs with Bairstow, Bell nicked one to the slips and was dismissed by Philander. The two English batsmen shared a century partnership to bring the innings back on track. Bell dismissed for 58, in comes Matt Prior.

Update 3: Ian Bell rebuilds innings

Things weren’t looking that good for the hosts after they lost four wickets for just 54 runs. But since then, Ian Bell (30*) and Bairstow (28*) have managed to survive at the crease as the South African bowlers continued to impress with their consistent pace. They have so far added 59 runs without any further loss.

Ian Bell needs to build a partnership with James Taylor and we wonder if the fans are missing Kevin Pietersen.

Update 2: England reeling at 39/3

Two wickets in two overs for Dale Steyn. He first dismissed Trot (8) after Smith reviewed an appeal rejected by the umpire. And then Alastair Cook (7) nicked one to slips, where Kallis took an excellent catch.

Update 1: South African innings ended at the score of 309, Philander (61) was the last batsman to be dismissed.

Swann invited him for a big hit by tossing the ball and Philander mistimed his shot and was stumped. It is because of him that the Proteas have managed to cross 300-run mark. He now has a job to do with the ball.

England were in a commanding position at the end of the first day`s play against South Africa at the 3rd and final Test.

At stumps South Africa were 262/7 with Steyn 21* and Philander 46* batting.
